8/16/2023 0 Comments Zoya shadow and bone netflix![]() ![]() The portrayals of race and discrimination in the show were uncomfortable in a realistic way, acknowledging what POC endure on a daily basis. I only went over a few characters that were part of a racial minority, but Bardugo’s and the Netflix writers’ casting was significant to myself and other POC viewers. The actor, Kit Young, is Scottish and Ugandan, an essentially perfect match for Jesper. ![]() He is also part Kaelish, people from the Wandering Isles who are generally pale with red hair. Jesper, a sharpshooter in the same gang as Inej, is part Zemeni, the people from the western continent of Novyi Zem resembling African people. Zoya, a powerful Grisha in the Second Army, is part Suli and played by Sujaya Dasgupta, a British-Indian actress. The Suli are nomadic people of the eastern continent resembling South Asian people. Inej, a girlboss spy for an upscale gang in Ketterdam, is Suli. Alina faces discrimination throughout the show for being part Shu Han, an appreciated representation of reality for the Asian community. The actress, Jessie Mei Li, matches the racial description being half white and half Chinese. ![]() Canonically, it is unknown what Alina’s race is, but it would be logical if she was part Shu Han (Asian) because she is an orphan from the southern region of Ravka. Netflix wanted to continue Bardugo’s racial inclusivity and discrimination parallels in the show adaptation. The story follows Alina as she discovers her power and learns to navigate the Second Army and advance Ravka in the war.īardugo does an amazing job at representing the struggles of minorities in several different ways while also including minorities in her work. The Grisha are valued in Ravka, executed in Fjerda to the north, and dissected by the Shu Han in the south. With enemies to the north and south, the country of Ravka has a legion of Grisha known as the Second Army led by the Darkling, the only summoner of darkness and the most powerful Grisha. Shadow and Bone is set in a world where there are Grisha, people who can manipulate elements such as wind, atoms, fire, darkness, water, and more. There were some writing decisions that irked me as a Grishaverse fan, but overall it was well written and an amazing show. Was it accurate to the books? Not really… but I still loved it! The writers of the show relied heavily on fan opinions for casting and plot as well as working very closely with Bardugo throughout the writing and filming process. Here’s where to find them.I read the entirety of the Grishaverse books by Leigh Bardugo before watching the Netflix adaptation of the first trilogy, Shadow and Bone. Once you’ve found yourself enchanted with the crew of misfits at the center of Shadow and Bone-and trust me, it only takes a few minutes-you’ll want to love their actors just as much. ![]() One of those less-than-sure-footed soldiers is Alina Starkov (Jessie Mei Li), a young cartographer about to learn she wields far more power than anyone could have guessed. They make up Ravka’s Second Army, while normal un-powered folk take up arms for the First Army. Grisha are powerful humans genetically imbued with super-heroic gifts-for instance, control over wind and water, or blood and metal. Created many moons ago by a villain known as the Black Heretic, the Fold is now devastating Ravka’s military and economy, and in response, a Grisha army has rallied to keep the nation aloft. The show introduces longtime fans and new viewers to the land of Ravka, split in two by a mysterious banner of darkness known as the Shadow Fold. This time, it’s the Netflix YA fantasy Shadow and Bone, adapted from Leigh Bardugo’s indomitable Grishaverse novels. Actors from giant franchises (think: Daniel Radcliffe or Chris Evans) owe much of their career to the fans who adored them off- as well as onscreen, so it’s always a surreal sort of magic to watch those humble beginnings spark within a new series. You also relish in the larger creation of those episodes-and particularly the people who brought them to life. Part of the sheer joy of falling in love with a new television franchise-especially one certified fresh by Rotten Tomatoes and well on its way to becoming a smash hit-is that you don’t merely luxuriate in the episodes themselves. ![]()
